If you visit Mie prefecture, please eat “AKAFUKU”.
It is a wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) with red bean paste on top of the rice cake. It was born about 300 years ago.
In Japan, there are two types of red bean paste: chunky (tsubu-an) and smooth (koshi-an). “AKAFUKU” uses koshi-an. As a feature of “AKAFUKU”, koshi-an is smooth and has a refined sweetness, the rice cake is soft and so delicious that you’ll want to eat as you can. “AKAFUKU” comes with a dedicated spatula. When I was a child, I felt a special value in that spatula.
Ingredients and nutrition label is as detailed below.
If you visit the flagship store near Ise Jingu, you can enjoy handmade “AKAFUKU”. It is softer and more delicious. But you can an ordinary “AKAFUKU” at major stations in the Kinki region and the Tokai region. (For example, Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and more)
I bought that for 900 yen at JR Nagoya Takashimaya. The price is as of September 2024.
