ONIGIRI SENBEI

rice crackers

It’s a soft, rice cracker shaped like an onigiri. Onigiri is a Japanese rice ball, often shaped into a triangle. Onigiri is commonly wrapped in nori (seaweed) and is a popular snack or portable meal. The shape of “ONIGIRI SENBEI” is cute and easy to eat. The fluffy, crispy rice base is seasoned with a soy sauce that emphasizes the umami of dashi, and it’s topped with fragrant roasted nori. (I have explained about dashi in this article.) The packaging is said to be inspired by the leader of kabuki troupe. One can feel a sense of Japan from its appearance as well. I have fond memories of bringing it as a snack on field trips from my preschool days.

There are primarily sold in western Japan, so they may be harder to find in eastern Japan.

I bought it in pharmacy near my house. I got it for 355 yen at there. (The price is as of September 2024) You can find it at any supermarket, too. In Japan, snacks are often cheaper at farmacy than at supermarkets or convenience stores.

Please be sure to try it 🙂
